Samedi 26 mai 2018, une plaque mémorielle a été inaugurée au cimetière communal de la ville. Elle y a été placée à la mémoire des membres de l’équipage du Lancaster LL 851-BQ-V du 550 Squadron RAF, tombé à Heimolen, un bourg de Sint-Niklaas le 22 mai 1944. Les sept aviateurs avaient été tués (voir bulletin 1 p.4).
Une formation de cornemuses a ouvert le service de mémoire. L’introduction a été faite par Andy Deaman. Le Bourgmestre de la ville, M. Lieven Dehandschutter a ensuite pris la parole, suivi par M. William Albertijn, initiateur du Mémorial de Sint-Niklaas.
Il a rappelé le long chemin parcouru pour que l’on n’oublie pas le sacrifice consenti par ces sept jeunes aviateurs tombés chez nous, pour notre liberté. George Turner, du 550 Squadron a remercié, au nom du 550 Squadron, l’équipe de Sint-Niklaas pour le travail réalisé pour que cette cérémonie puisse avoir lieu. Deux enfants ont alors déposé un portrait et une fleur devant chaque tombe pendant que l’on citait le nom des victimes.

On Saturday, May 26, 2018, a memorial plaque was unveiled at the city’s communal cemetery. It was placed there in memory of the crew of the Lancaster LL 851-BQ-V of 550 Squadron RAF, which fell in Heimolen, a village in Sint-Niklaas on May 22, 1944. The seven airmen had been killed (see bulletin 1 p.4).
A parade of bagpipes opened the memory service. The introduction was made by Andy Deaman. The Mayor of the city, Mr. Lieven Dehandschutter then spoke, followed by Mr. William Albertijn, initiator of the Sint-Niklaas Memorial.
He recalled how far we have come to ensure that we do not forget the sacrifice made by these seven young airmen who fell for our freedom. George Turner of 550 Squadron thanked, on behalf of 550 Squadron, the Sint-Niklaas team for the work done to make this ceremony possible. Two children then laid a portrait and a flower in front of each grave while the names of the victims were being remembered.
