Dimanche 27 mai, le Schobbroek Comité de Westerlo a organisé la cérémonie bisannuelle d’hommage aux hommes de l’équipage du Lancaster DV 309-BQ-S tombé à Westerlo la nuit du 21 au 22 mai 1944. L’avion avait explosé avant de toucher le sol, ne laissant aucune chance aux 7 hommes d’équipage qui furent tués dans l’accident. Depuis plus de 20 ans, le Shoobroeck Comité entretient la mémoire de ces hommes en organisant une cérémonie du Souvenir tous les deux ans au monument dédié à l’équipage du Lancaster.
Cette année, l’organisateur avait préparé un programme exceptionnel: après un service religieux en l’église de Voortkapelle, les invités furent conduits en convoi de véhicules datant de la dernière guerre et de remorques tractées par des chevaux de trait jusqu’au Mémorial où allait se déroules le service de Mémoire.
Une importante délégation du 550 Squadron assistait à la cérémonie, ainsi que des représentants des autorités de la ville et de la Province d’Anvers, d’organisations patriotiques et d’Anciens Combattants.

On Sunday, May 27, the Schobbroek Committee of Westerlo organized the biennial ceremony of tribute to the men of the crew of the Lancaster DV 309-BQ-S who fell in Westerlo on the night of May 21-22, 1944. The aircraft exploded before touchdown, leaving no chance for the 7 crew members who were killed in the accident. For more than 20 years, the Shoobroeck Committee has been preserving the memory of these men by organizing a Remembrance Ceremony every two years at the monument dedicated to the Lancaster crew.
This year, the organizer had prepared an exceptional program: after a religious service in the church of Voortkapelle, The guests were taken in convoys of vehicles dating from the last war and trailers towed by draught horses to the Memorial where the Memorial Service was to be held.
A large delegation from 550 Squadron attended the ceremony, as well as representatives from the city and the Province of Antwerp, patriotic and Veterans organizations.
