Les faits - The facts

* Sur le Battle Order Serial No. 43 du 550 Squadron figurent 20 Lancaster dont dix-huit participent à la mission sous le commandement du Squadron Leader Caldow. Le F/Lt Robert Liefooghe décolle de North Killingham aux environs de 18.30 h. L’appareil emporte quinze bombes : 1 x 4.000 lb HC, 6 x CP No. 16 en 8 x CP No. 14 (ces dernières sont des bombes incendiaires).
Liefooghe est accompagné par cinq des six membres de son équipage traditionnel. Robert Anderson, son ‘air gunner’ depuis novembre 1944, est depuis peu en congé de maladie suite à une infection aux oreilles et a été remplacé par le Sergeant Self. Le Lancaster BQ-B NG336 décolle donc vers Nürenberg, le 16 au soir.
La mission opérationnelle du 16/17 mars 1945 sera la dernière grande action des chasseurs de nuit d’Hessental. Au cours de cette nuit, l’ensemble du ‘geschwader’ – dont un ‘Gruppe’ est stationné à Schwäbisch Hall – a mis 23 chasseurs en œuvre. Le Ju 88 G-6 de Helmut Bunje décolle à 20.25h en direction de Strasbourg. Le pilote parvient à un certain moment en compagnie d’autres chasseurs à s’infiltrer au sein du flot des avions Lancaster avec les conséquences dramatiques que l’on peut imaginer. Entre Strasbourg et Nürnberg, ou plus précisément entre Strasbourg et Würzburg pas moins de vingt Lancaster sont abattus. Quatre bombardiers britanniques s’écrasent dans les environs de Schwäbisch Hall. Deux de ces appareils sont descendus par le Lieutenant Helmut Bunje, un troisième par le Gruppenkommandeur Helmuth Schulte, dont celui du P/O Liefooghe. L'équipage est tué, excepté Liefooghe, qui sera récupéré par les Allemands et fait prisonnier.

* On the Battle Order Serial No 43 of 550 Squadron represents 20 Lancaster among whom eighteen participate in the mission under the command of Squadron Leader Caldow. The F / LT Robert Liefooghe takes off from North Killingholme in the neighbourhoods of 18.30 am. The plane takes fifteen bombs: 1 x 4.000 lb HC, 6 x CP No. 16 in 8 x CP No. 14 (these last ones are incendiary bombs).
Liefooghe is accompanied by five of six members of his traditional crew. Robert Anderson, his “air gunner” since November, 1944, is recently on sick leave further to an infection in ears and was replaced by Sergeant Self. The Lancaster BQ-B NG 336 thus takes off the 16th evening, to Nürenberg.
The operational mission of March 16th, 1945 will be the last big action of the night fighters of Hessental. During this night, the whole “geschwader” - with which “Gruppe “ is parked to Schwäbisch Hall - operated 23 fighters. The Ju 88 G-6 of Helmut Bunje takes off in 20h25 in the direction of Strasbourg. The pilot reaches at the certain moment together with the other fighters to infiltrate within the stream of planes Lancaster with the dramatic consequences which we can imagine. Between Strasbourg and Nurnberg or more exactly between Strasbourg and Würzburg not less twenty Lancaster is shot down. Four British bombers crash around of Schwäbisch Hall. Two of these aircraft fell by the Lieutenant Helmut Bunje, the third by Gruppenkommando Helmuth Schulte, of which the one of P/O Liefooghe. The crew is killed, excepted Liefooghe, who will be kept by the Germans and maked Prisoner of War.
